Who killed the Elephant ist ein Akt des Wiederaufbaus, eine feministische Geschichtsschreibung des postkolonialen Hongkongs. Das Stück lässt uns eintauchen in das Gefühlsleben einer Elefanten-Matriarchin und nimmt uns dorthin mit, wo die Toten betrauert und der Lebenswille erneuert wird. Der Text erzählt die Geschichte eines britischen Kolonialpolizisten in Burma, der einen entlaufenen Elefanten erschießt.
Angelehnt an eine Kurzgeschichte von George Orwell, hinterfragt Vee Leong erstmals 2012 die Matrix der Zivilisation, der Disziplin und des Staatsapparats. 2021 nimmt sie sich das eigene Werk erneut vor, um ihm durch eine rein weibliche Besetzung eine neue Stimme zu geben. Vee Leong wechselt nun die Perspektive und gestaltet aus Sicht der Natur eine neue planetarische Ordnung.
Kraftvoll, humorvoll und lyrisch verwebt Who killed the Elephant komplexe Gefühle und Erfahrungen zu einem polyphonen Triptychon, in dem verschiedene Erzählformen und Sprachen ineinanderfließen.

Who killed the Elephant is an act of rebuilding, a feminist historiography of postcolonial Hong Kong. The piece lets us take a dive into the emotional life of an elephant matriarch as it takes us to a place where the dead are mourned and the will to live is rejuvenated. The text tells the story of a British colonial police officer in Burma who shoots an escaped elephant.
Based on a short story by George Orwell, Vee Leong starts scrutinising the matrix of civilisation, of discipline and the state apparatus for the first time in 2012. She returns to her own work in 2021 to give it a new voice through an all-female cast. Vee Leong now changes perspective and shapes a new planetary order from the viewpoint of nature.
Who killed the Elephant vigorously, humorously, and lyrically weaves complex emotions and experiences into a polyphonic triptych into which different forms of narration and languages coalesce.

Vee Leong ist Dramatikerin und Regisseurin. Im Zentrum ihres Schaffens steht textbasierte und intermediale Kunst, die sie nutzt, um gesellschaftlich relevante Themen aus einer feministischen Perspektive heraus zu erforschen. Im Rahmen ihrer Kollaborationen nahm sie u.a. am Hong Kong Arts Festival, am Taipei Arts Festival sowie am Manchester International Festival teil. Sie unterrichtet Dramaturgie an der Hongkong Academy for Performing Arts und lebt in Hongkong und Taipeh.
