In einem Monolog feiert Lulu Obermayer die radikale künstlerische Praxis von Broadway-Tänzerin, Choreografin und Malerin Marta Becket, die 1967 ein verlassenes Theater in Death Valley Junction in der kalifornischen Mojave-Wüste entdeckte. Kurzentschlossen beendete sie ihr Leben „on the road“ und eröffnete das Amargosa Opera House, wo sie bis zu ihrem Tod 2017 lebte und arbeitete. Wie Marta Becket ihr Publikum im Amargosa Opera House an die Wand malte, so spielt Lulu Obermayer mit Publikum, Licht und Schatten und erzählt eine Geschichte von Geistern, Zeit und Hingabe. Es entsteht eine Fata Morgana, in der Theater, Träume und Schicksal verschwimmen. In einem Geister-Duett überlagern sich die Planetenkonstellationen und reflektieren über die (Un-)Möglichkeit eines künstlerischen Lebens. Die Performance erinnert uns an das Potential von Theater und Bühne als Spiegel des Lebens, als Ort des gemeinsamen Erinnerns und Abschiednehmens.

In a monologue, Lulu Obermayer celebrates the radical artistic practice of Broadway dancer, choreographer and painter Marta Becket, who discovered an abandoned theater in Death Valley Junction in the Mojave Desert in 1967. On the spot she quit her life on the road and opened the Amargosa Opera House in the desert, where she lived and worked until her death in 2017. Just as Marta Becket painted her audience in the Amargosa Opera House on the wall, Lulu Obermayer plays with the audience, light and shadow and tells a story of ghosts, time and devotion. A mirage arises in which the theater, dreams and fate become blurred. In a ghostly duet, the planetary constellations overlap and reflect on the (im)possibility of an artistic life. The performance reminds us of the potential of theater and stage as a mirror of life, as a place of collective remembrance and goodbye.

Lulu Obermayer’s artistic practice operates at the interface of opera, performance and theater and uses the European canon as a point of friction. After studying acting in New York and dramaturgy in Leipzig, Obermayer completed her bachelor’s degree in Contemporary Performance Practice at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She then completed her master’s degree in Solo Dance and Authorship at the HZT in Berlin. Her performances have been presented at various international venues and festivals, including Steirischer Herbst (Graz), Theater Neumarkt (Zurich), DeSingel (Antwerp), Sophiensaele (Berlin) and HochX (Munich).
Lulu Obermayers künstlerische Praxis bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle von Oper, Performance und Theater und nutzt den europäischen Kanon als Reibungspunkt. Sie hat Schauspiel, Dramaturgie, Performance und Solo Dance and Authorship studiert. Ihre Performances wurden an verschiedenen internationalen Spielstätten und auf Festivals präsentiert, darunter Steirischer Herbst (Graz), Theater Neumarkt (Zürich), DeSingel (Antwerpen), Sophiensaele (Berlin) und HochX (München).
