Love Is Not Enough ist ein Solo über transnationale Adoption – persönlich, performativ und gesellschaftskritisch. Ausgangspunkt ist die Biografie der Schauspielerin Sarella Vargas, die in Peru geboren und nach Deutschland adoptiert wurde. Auf der Bühne setzt sie sich mit Verlust, Identität und Zugehörigkeit auseinander und hinterfragt gängige Narrative von Adoption als „Happy End“. Das Stück verbindet autobiografisches Material mit literarischen Texten, Tanz, Gesang, Video und Sprachwechseln zwischen Deutsch und Spanisch. Die Erzählung ist fragmentarisch und nicht linear – sie bewegt sich zwischen Erinnerung, Gegenwart und Inszenierung. Humor ist dabei Überlebensstrategie, Moment der Selbstermächtigung, und zärtlicher Widerstand gegen Vereinfachung. Teil der Inszenierung sind Fotos und Videoaufnahmen aus dem Leben der Darstellerin, darunter dokumentarisches Material aus Peru, die bei der Wiederbegegnung mit ihrer leiblichen Familie entstanden sind. Love Is Not Enough lädt dazu ein, sich mit einer häufig marginalisierten Perspektive auseinanderzusetzen – und Verlust, Ambivalenz und die Suche nach Zugehörigkeit auszuhalten.

Love Is Not Enough is a solo play about transnational adoption – it’s personal, performative, and socially critical. The starting point is the biography of actress Sarella Vargas, who was born in Peru and adopted to Germany. On stage, she confronts experiences of loss, identity, and belonging, questioning dominant narratives of adoption as a “happy ending.”
The performance combines autobiographical monologues with literary texts, dance, song, video, and shifts between German and Spanish. Its structure is fragmentary and non-linear, moving between memory, present experience, and theatrical construction. Despite its existential themes, Love Is Not Enough is infused with moments of humour – as a survival strategy, an act of self-empowerment, and a gentle resistance to simplification. A projection screen on stage is used for displaying photographs and films from the performer’s life, including video footage created during her reunion with her biological family in Peru. Live-generated soundscapes and a precise lighting design open up emotional spaces between visibility and withdrawal.
Love Is Not Enough understands healing not as a destination, but as a process. The play invites audiences to deal with ambivalence, loss, the search for belonging – and explore a perspective that is often marginalised.
